Laugh like a Laughing Baby

Laughing Baby
In addition to the scientific studies about the benefits of laughter, we know laughter is good for us because we feel it in every cell of our being. Whether something spontaneous makes us laugh, we hear a joke or watch a comedy, we have plenty of opportunities to laugh.

And if we can't find any opportunities to laugh, we can make them!

One of the easiest poses in yoga is called Laughing Baby. If you haven't tried it before, you may wonder why it's called Laughing Baby. If you have, you probably felt a bit silly doing it, especially if your yoga instructor encouraged you to start laughing once you got into the pose! Whether it's sillier to do it in a class full of other adults or alone in your living room (laughter included, of course), is your judgment call. Either way, it's a fun way to stretch your body while lifting your spirits!

To make your way to Laughing Baby pose:
  1. Lie on your back on a yoga mat or soft carpet.
  2. Bend your knees to your chest.
  3. Open your knees, bringing them towards your armpits.
  4. Make sure your ankles are directly over your knees, so that your shins are perpendicular to the floor.
  5. Flex your feet.
  6. Either old the outer edges of your feet as you draw the knees towards the floor, or hook your forefingers around your big toes.
  7. Start laughing - as loudly as you can, and deep from your belly - as you enjoy the full experience of becoming a Laughing Baby!

I have never heard of the laughing baby yoga pose but I must try it! I have heard for several years that laughter is good for us. We can even “pretend” we are laughing and our body doesn’t know the difference. I quit laughing when my husband took his life elsewhere. He was always making me (or anyone one else around) laugh. I miss that jokester!! I will honor him by trying to laugh more. Note – I have a poster above my desk with a woman in the “tree pose” with the words Ha Ha Ha all around her as a reminder to laugh more. Now I just need to commit to doing it. Thank you for this article and the link to Web MD. I’ll go read that now. ;)

LOL... I have a funny story about my recent Laughing Baby Pose.

My oldest daughter is visiting and was working from our kitchen table (thankfully NOT in a meeting) when I was doing yoga on Zoom with my teacher. At my end, I had earphones on as to not disturb my daughter with my practice.... until Laughing Baby, that is!

As per my teacher's instructions, I got into the pose, feet up and started belly laughing out loud! My daughter, thinking this was a "Zen" practice today, looked up from her work, "What ARE you doing?"

LAUGHING, of course!!! :-)

I was telling a client, just today, how my body starts smiling widely when my yoga teacher tells us it's time for Laughing Baby! The joy starts before I even find the pose!

Laughing like a baby and feeling the joy, such a great reminder!! We do the pose in yoga almost daily, it's great. Anything to help us get out of our busy minds. Thanks!

Out of our busy minds and INTO our joy... and it's oh-so innocently easy to do!
